Analysis of factors affecting the readiness for hospital discharge of the elderly penile cancer patients after surgery

Abstract:

Objective

To understand the readiness for hospital discharge of the elderly patients who have underwent the penectomy and discuss the affecting factors.

Method

From January 2017 to may 2018, in the Department of Urology, Cancer Center, sun Yat-sen university, the Chinese Version of the General Information Questionnaire, the Scale of Quality of Guidance for Hospital Discharge and the Scale of Readiness for Hospital Discharge were used to conduct surveys and researches on the 76 patients who underwent the penectomy in the Department Urology of our hospital at an age of 65 years or older.

Results

The elderly patients who underwent the penectomy had total score of (91±14) points on their readiness for hospital discharge. The multiple linear regression analysis showed that way of surgery, complications, subsequent treatments, marital status, residence after hospital discharge and family monthly income were all the major factors affecting the readiness for hospital discharge of the elderly patients who underwent the penectomy.

Conclusion

The readiness for hospital discharge of the patients who underwent the penectomy is at a moderate level. Medical staff should, commence to formulate a personalized rehabilitation training plan for the patients based on their specific physical conditions, so as to improve to reduce the occurrence of post-surgery complications and the hospital readmission rate.
