Abstract:

Objective

To explore the growth associated protein (GAP-43) expression in patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder painful syndrome (IC/BPS) and the correlation between symptoms.

Methods

Through the immune histochemical method to detect GAP-43 expression in bladder tissue of 31 patients with IC/BPS, ICSI, ICPI and PUF score before treatment, and the ralationship between GAP-43 expression and patient's symptoms were assessed.

Results

Of 31 IC/BPS patients, ICSI scores were ranged from 13 to 19 (mean 16±3), ICPI scores were ranged from 7 to 16 (mean 12±1), PUF scores were ranged from 16 to 25 (mean 20±2), symptom scores were ranged from 37 to 57 (46±4). The expression of GAP-43 immune histochemical scores were ranged from 1 to 6 (mean 5.2 ± 0.3) points. There was a positive correlation between GAP-43 expression levels in the bladder tissue and symptom severity of IC/BPS patients, correlation coefficients were 0.469, 0.611, 0.426 respectively, P value were 0.046, 0.039, 0.008 respectively.

Conclusion

GAP-43 expression in bladder tissue of IC/BPS patients are positively related to the patient's symptom severity, suggesting that GAP-43 expression in bladder tissue may be involved in the pathogenesis of IC/BPS.
