Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the relationship of nerve fiber density in bladder tissues and urodynamic tests in patients with interstitial cystitis(IC), in order to understand its role in the pathogenesis of IC.

Methods

The group included 43 cases of IC patients. All cases accepted pelvic pain and urinary urgency frequgency (PUF) and visual analogue score (VAS), pain scores, urodynamic tests, immunohistochemistry of the PGP9.5 monoclonal antibody and nerve fiber counting were performed in bladder tissues.

Results

The urinary frequgency, urgency and VAS scores were (2.8±0.9), (2.1±0.8), (6.2±2.7) respectively. The maximum flow rate, first sensation, first desire to void, strong desire to void, maximum cystometric capacity, max detrusor pressure were (18±4) ml/L, (128±57) ml, (163±59)ml, (208±86) ml, (226±94) ml, (33±7) cmH2O respectively. The nerve fiber density of the bladder tissue in the group was (5.2±2.2)/cm2.

Conclusions

The density of nerve fibers in bladder tissues of IC has a positive relationship with the urinary frequgency, urgency and VAS scores, and it has a negative relationship with the first sensation, first desire to void, strong desire to void, maximum cystometric capacity, which suggestes that high expression of nerve fibers in bladder tissues may play an important role in the pathogenesis of IC.
