Abstract:

Objective

To analyze the effect of modified holmium laser lithotripsy combined with stone basket for complex upper ureteral calculi.

Methods

110 patients with complex upper ureteral calculi were divided into routine group and modified group according to random number table, 55 cases in each group. The routine group were treated with routine holmium laser lithotripsy combined with stone basket insertion, while the improved group was treated with modified holmium laser lithotripsy combined with stone basket. The improved method was to select the modified Trendelenburg position and place continuous water injection beside the ureteral catheter. The data were compared between the two groups.

Results

The success rate of single lithotripsy in the improved group was 100.00%, which was significantly higher than 88.68% in the routine group (P<0.05). The success rate and stone clearance rate of the two groups were similar (P>0.05). The lithotripsy time and total operation time in the improved group was shorter than those in the routine group (P<0.05), and the total hospitalization expenses in the improved group was less than that in the routine group (P<0.05). The incidence of urinary tract infection, total complications and recurrence in the improved group were 0.00%, 1.89% and 0.00% respectively, which was lower than those of 11.32%, 18.87% and 13.21% in the routine group (all P<0.05).

Conclusion

The improved holmium laser lithotripsy combined with lithotripsy basket is effective and economic for complex upper ureteral calculi.

Key words: Holmium laser, Stone basket, Ureteral calculi
